LED Floodlights help Highlight the Presence of Criminals for Less

It's the scenario every homeowner dreads. A noise downstairs… an unexplained creek of the floorboards… the sound of shattering glass. There's a burglar in your home!

Last year there were over a million reported burglaries in the UK alone. More burglaries are caused due to the carelessness of homeowners than anything else. Most house burglars are actually opportunists acting on our mistakes. Many spend months casing potential targets and even using social networking sites, such as Facebook, as research tools for finding unattended homes.

So how do you avoid being burgled? You learn how not to from someone who spends their time trying to of course!

Back in November 2011 a London based house thief provided the police with a checklist explaining why homeowners were targeted by people like himself. The most startling revelation was that the 32 year old Leon Reid claimed he had never once forced his way into a single property, instead relying on the mistakes and oversights of imprudent homeowners.

The list detailed the types of houses Reid would target and which deterrents were most effective. Shingle drive-ways, anti-climb paint, and CCTV all ranked quite highly. Even fake security measures would be enough to deter the thief as long as they were evidenced.

Interestingly several of Reid's recommendations involved lighting. According to Reid something as simple as a properly illuminated house exterior would be enough to deter even the most seasoned criminals.

Architectural lighting and wide beam angled spotlights are designed to bathe the area surrounding your home in bright, white light. To offer even more security most are designed with an in-built motion sensor, which causes them to switch on automatically when a presence is detected.

LED Floodlights offer an even more efficient means of protecting your home. Their light is much brighter and is able to penetrate much further in the darkness, allowing you to cover a larger area with a single flood light. They also use a lot less electricity, so the cost of protecting your home doesn't become prohibitive.

Changing exterior security lights can also be quite bothersome as they are usually in hard-to-reach places. You may have to risk going up a rickety ladder in order to replace quite a heavy unit. The life expectancy of an LED is many times more than a normal halogen, so you will be changing them a lot less often.

Amusingly, Reid's most feared security deterrent is actually one of the most obvious. A dog isn't just a great companion; they are perfect for detecting unwelcome guests. Even a small dog's bark can alert you when needed.
