The comparison of LED and LCD TVs is a much necessary one for consumers looking forward to buying a new television. Let's start with the basics. An LED television is actually not an accurate description of the device, although it has been widely known by this very name for so many years. Technologically speaking, LED TVs are also LCD TVs only that use LED for the purpose of back lighting, while conventional LCD TVs use CFL lighting for the same purpose. Both these televisions use the liquid crystal diode (LCD) technology front panel, which has the 'twisting crystals' that are the signature of the LCD technology.
Coming back to LED TVs, they comprise of mainly two types of back lighting – local dimming and edge lighting. The former includes banks of LED lights on the backside of the panel that can lower the intensity of back lighting in dark areas, and increase the same in bright areas for better contrast and higher quality blacks. The second type, edge lighting, has LEDs situated around the edge of the panel, which also helps in a thinner frame.
Contrast/Black Levels: LCD TVs block the back light passing through the panel to create dark tones, which has also been a major problem in this technology. Local dimming LED TVs, on the other hand, dim the back light in areas where the screen is meant to be dark. Talking of Edge lit LED TVs, they will surely have brighter whites compared to LCDs, but do not have control over back lighting like their local dimming counterparts. However, some of the latest LCD TVs have the capacity to display highly concentrated black levels, which leaves the choice on the buyer to choose between them or local dimming LEDs.
Viewing Angles: This is actually an ambiguous topic to talk about, since according to experts, the quality of clear glass panel is the main deciding factor in case of both LED and LCD TVs. Thicker and higher quality glass panels have a better viewing angle. Further, anti glare technologies play their part in preventing glare, but have an impact on viewing angles and picture depth. Like in the case of contrast/black levels, some of the latest LCD TVs fare better than the older models. On the flip-side, there are many edge lit LED TVs that have very poor viewing angles with contrast and black level degradation at an angle of 30 degrees off center. Local dimming LED TVs are the best bet in this case, followed by LCD TVs.
Color Accuracy: In case of white LED back lights, there is not much difference between LED and LCD TVs, but with color wheel or RGB colored lights, LED TVs show more realistic color. TO sum it up, colored back light LED TVs are the best choice in this regard, while LCD TVs having fluorescent back light and white back light LED TVs stand on the same ground.
Video: Quality of rapid movement video display depends on the response time and refresh rate of the television, and the type of back lighting use does not have any role to play in this regard. Both LED and LCD TVs score equal in this case.
