Looking on to the pressure vessel concept and parameters

Pressure vessel is a storage tank or vessel that has been designed to operate above 15 psgi. Common materials held and maintained by pressure vessel are propane, air, water, refrigerant, ammonia, and nitrogen. Many chemicals change their state on storage therefore Pressure vessels are often used to store chemicals due to their pressurizing capability. Important parameters when specifying pressure vessels are:

- Capacity
- Temperature range
- Maximum pressure.

Capacity is the volume of the pressure vessel. The temperature range indicates the temperature of the material the pressure vessel can withstand. Maximum pressure is the pressure range the vessel can withstand. In addition to pressurizing capability many pressure vessels have built-in temperature control. This helps to keep the volatile chemicals in their inert state.

There are two types of pressure vessel:

- Spherical pressure vessel
- Cylindrical pressure vessel.

Spherical pressure vessels are thin walled vessels. This forms the most typical application of plane stress. Cylindrical pressure vessel is a vessel with fixed radius and thickness subjected to internal gage pressure. This cylindrical vessel has an axial symmetry. Pressure vessel has a temperature that exceeds 750˚F and therefore the safety measure is of very much important. Vessels are created using three methods forging, welding and brazing. All the methods involve heating of metal pieces and joining them together. Forging refers to the formation of metal parts through the application heat and pressure. Welding refers to the process of joining two similar metal pieces. Finally brazing refers to the process of filling the space between the metals with non-ferrous metal.

Cracks and damage in vessels may cause severe rupture failure and leakage. Rupture failure may cause severe damage to life and property. Leaking of vessel causes severe health problems like suffocation, fire and explosion hazardous. These problems can be rectified by proper use and regular inspection.

Application of pressure vessel:

- Cosmetic industry
- Chemical industry
- Food and beverage industry
- Oil and fuel industry
- Paper and pulp industry
- Pharmaceutical and plastic processing
- Power generation
- Energy processing

The safe design, installation, operation and maintenance are required with appropriate codes and standards for the safety operation of pressure vessel. High pressure vessel functions under great pressure without compromising seals are bursting. Some pressure vessel monitor the temperature of their content with the series of gauge on the outside of the tank. Other types of pressure vessels are designed to store volatile substance at high temperature. Pressure vessel manufacturers design new tanks using variety of criteria, including the selection of materials to withstand shock, vibration, corrosion, temperature changes, and other environmental conditions.

When a container is pressurized then pressure is exerted against the walls of the vessels. Pressure is always normal to the surface regardless of the shape.
