Novatel MiFi 2372: First GSM MiFi In America?

American consumers can soon expect a GSM MiFi of their own.

Novatel Wireless recently had their MiFi 2372 pass FCC testing.  The MiFi 2372 will be the first MiFi available in America that will use GSM networks.  According to leaked FCC documents, the MiFi 2372 will resemble the MiFi 2200--currently available in America, but running on CDMA networks--and it will utilize the 850/1900Mhz bands.

The two major American cellular companies using GSM networks are AT&T and T-Mobile.  Many MiFi enthusiasts are eagerly waiting one of those companies to announce support for the MiFi 2372.

At this time, the MiFi 2200 is the only version of the personal hotspot available in America.  Launched in May of 2009, the MiFi 2200 has received rave reviews for being the smallest, fastest battery powered 3G modem and router in one.  The MiFi 2200 is a CDMA device that connects to either Verizon Wireless or Sprint's cellular networks.  Transfer speeds routinely exceed 1Mbps download and .5Mbps upload.

One of the few drawbacks of the MiFi 2200 is the fact that it is a CDMA device, incapable of being transfer to a network other than the original network is was purchased with.

GSM networks allow users to easily swap hardware between cellular providers.  All GSM devices have SIM cards, which hold data allowing a device to connect to one specific GSM network.  Users can quickly change networks by swapping an old SIM card with a new one.

Owners of the GSM MiFi currently available in Europe--the MiFi 2572--are smitten with transfer speeds on GSM networks; speeds can be 4-5 times faster than average transfer speeds on Verizon and Sprint's CDMA networks.

Fingers-crossed, in short time, American users can also opt for a GSM MiFi with faster transfer speeds.

Go for higher optical zoom. Digital zoom does not matter. Calculate how much distance you can keep between the screen and the projector and that will decide what type of lens you will need. For a shorter distance, go for the short throw lens and if the projector is at a distance from the screen, choose a long throw lens. In any case, ask the projector dealer to give you a demo in your home. That will give you the best idea.
