Technology Lingo Definitions
Technology is changing quickly and to keep up with it or to at least understand the cool gadgets is to understand the terminology that comes with them. Some of the terms outlined below you have become accustomed to seeing, but do you know what they mean?
1. Bits, Bytes, Megabytes, and More – Memory -we know when we see 1GB that it is less than 4GB. We also know that most computers released today, 2010, come with at least 4GB of memory. But what is a Gigabyte? Let's start with the smallest component of memory the bit. Bits are grouped so that 8 bits equals one Byte. Then, 1024 Bytes equal on Kilobyte (KB). Some round this off to 1000, but technically it is 1024. This number repeats itself – 1024 KB equals 1 Megabyte (MB). 1024 MB is equal to 1 Gigabyte (GB). And it goes on through Terabytes and such. When measuring megabytes, they have to be done in exponents of 2 – this is why we see either 2, 4, 8, 16, etc.
2. Pixels – We see pixels measured in camera quality resolution measurements or screen resolution on our computers. Pixels are tiny dots or elements that make up a picture. You may be familiar with the term "DPI" or "Dots Per Inch" - this is the same type of terminology -- the more pixels, or dots, the clearer your picture or document will resemble the original. The word "pixel" comes from a combination of the words "picture element." A significantly high number of pixels in a given image, which is especially evident in viewing HDTV, provide greater clarity and image detail. The number of pixels is usually referred to as the resolution. Pixels are now measured by megapixels. For instance, 2200 x 2800 is now 6 megapixels. One million pixels equals a megapixel – multiplying 2200 x 2800 gives us just over 6 million pixels, thus the 6 megapixel quantifier.
3. Bluetooth -Bluetooth is a wireless technology which allows 'personal area networking' - connection up to 100m between units. Bluetooth uses a short wavelength radio transmission from fixed and mobile devices. It can help you synchronize or connect several devices. There are three classes of Bluetooth, Class 1 extends around 100 meters, Class 2 equals 10 meters and Class 3 one meter. There are also different versions that quantify the amount of information that can be transferred. You will find Bluetooth on your mobile phone, hands free headset, mouse, keyboard and printers, GPS receivers and such.
4. HDTV – High-Definition television systems refer to video that has a substantially higher resolution than traditional television systems or SDTV. HD has one or two million pixels per frame, which is about five times that of standard television. With a higher quality image, viewers are enjoying sharper images and more vibrant colors. Early HDTV broadcasting used analog techniques, but today HDTV is digitally broadcasted.
5. Dolby Digital® 5.1 - Dolby Digital provides five full-bandwidth channels, front left, front right, center, surround left, and surround right, for true surround sound quality. A low frequency effect (LFE) channel is included that provides the sound needed for special effects and action sequences in movies. The LFE channel is one-tenth of the bandwidth of the other channels and is sometimes erroneously called the subwoofer channel. This multi-channel scheme is known as 5.1 channel.
