The Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 - The GSM Alternative

On June 13, 2009, Novatel Wireless, partnered with Telephonica Espana, launched the first GSM compatible MiFi. The MiFi 2352 supports triband HSPA (900/1900/2100Mhz) and quadband GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900Mhz). In offering a MiFi compatible with the GSM standard, Novatel Wireless is nearly quadrupling the MiFi's potential market.

The GSM standard is nearly ubiquitous worldwide, supporting approximately 80% of the cellular devices in use around the globe. Users of GSM equipment can quickly swap SIM cards, which are programmed to run a device on a cellular carrier's network, thus changing carriers and rates instantly. Cellular users who travel often take advantage of lower local rates or better local reception by purchasing new SIM cards compatible with local carriers. SIM cards can be purchased nearly anywhere: from local grocery stores, from street vendors, or from retailers on the Internet.

One of the reasons the MiFi 2352 is such an exciting product is that it is SIM-unlocked, which makes it compatible with SIM cards from nearly any cellular provider. Travelling with ultraportable MiFi abroad is now possible and should be easy to do.

Telephonica Espana will expand opportunities for third-party developers who are programming applications for the MiFi. The MiFi 2352's Telephonica Espana launch page will allow full microSD functionality and access to newly developed widgets and programs.

Since the MiFi 2352 has on-board GPS, there will be location-based applications developed to run on the MiFi's Linux operating system. By having applications run off a microSD card in the MiFi, users will conveniently be able access those applications from any device with access to the MiFi. Imagine the convenience of being able to connect to always-on location-based applications--applications like the iPhone offers--but being able to do that without being tethered to any one device! Suddenly, all of a user's WiFi compatible devices become smarter, more informative, and more efficient.

The MiFi 2352 shines for another reason: its superior connection speeds. Download speeds average 7.2 Mbps, and upload speeds average 5.76 Mbps when connected to a HSPA network. Compare those speeds to a MiFi 2200, where download speeds average 1Mbps, and uploads average .5Mbps when connected to a CDMA network.

The Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 is an exciting new product, ready to be taken advantage of by users who need wireless broandband Internet anywhere they travel. Plus, with full third-party support, the MiFi 2352 will grow more useful with time as developers create new, informative programs.
