3 Things Every Company Can Do to Make Sure Customers Receive and Read Their Emails
When a person signs up to receive emails from a company, they are giving that company permission to send them information straight to their inbox. Even with this permission however, sometimes emails are not received or the customer is not sure why they are getting the emails in the first place, which can be very frustrating. Here are 3 things that every company can do to make sure customers receive and read their emails:
- Use a double opt in option. When an Internet user signs up to receive company information via email, they are either using a single opt in option or a double opt in option. When a single opt in is used, the Internet user receives a confirmation of the sign up after they fill out their information. This confirmation usually appears on the same website, in a separate window that pops up or through an email. A double opt in gives the user confirmation on the website but the email system will also automatically generate an email to the user that instructs them to click a link within the email to verify that they really want to sign up for the company's email list. Using the double opt in option decreases the chances of the Internet user not remembering that they signed up for it later down the road. This can lead to less emails being moved to the junk folder of their inbox or being reported as email spam.
- Use a reputable email sending company. Email companies that have been sending commercial emails for other companies for several years have a better track record with Internet service providers and email services. Using a reputable company to send emails may mean less messages being sent straight to the spam or junk email box by the email service that the Internet user uses.
- Remind a person that they signed up for the emails in the first place. After weeks, months or even years go past, Internet users are not going to remember what they signed up for. Due to this, they may receive many commercial emails that they don't think they signed up for and that they do not want anymore. This can lead to the user either deleting the messages or reporting the company for email spam. This cannot be avoided all together, but if text is placed in the header area of the email that reminds a person that they signed up for it, it will lessen the chances. For example, the header of an email could say "You have elected to receive emails from our company by opting in" and then list the website domain where the user signed up. You have to give them an opt out option as well so you may want to follow up the reminder with "but if you would no longer like to receive these emails" and then give opt out instructions.
Sending emails to inform current, past and potential customers of current happenings at a company has been a popular method of marketing for many years. It has become more difficult though because Internet users are getting very picky with what the sign up for and what emails they receive. No one likes to receive emails that they did not ask for or want so it is important that a company takes steps to make sure that people are receiving and then opening and reading the emails that they are sending out.
