How to Ensure your Email Reaches your Readers

With SPAM filters continually increasing their efforts to stop unsolicited mail, more and more of your legitimate marketing emails are not getting through to your readers; your best-written sales letter means nothing if it doesn’t even reach your subscribers.

To ensure your marketing emails are never mistaken for spam, follow these simple and effective rules.

1. Use a double opt-in mailing list. This involves sending a confirmation email to the subscriber, which asks them to confirm the subscription. A double opt-in mailing list is the most effective way to ensure the person actually subscribed to your list and ultimately prevents anyone from accusing you of sending him or her email they didn’t ask for.

2. Ask subscribers to whitelist your domain. Once someone has subscribed and confirmed their subscription, tell them (on the subscription confirmation page) to whitelist your domain so their email server will recognize you as a legitimate sender. Including this in the welcome email you send to new subscribers is also a good idea.

3. Format your email using plain text instead of HTML. Plain text emails are less likely to be filtered by the mail servers, however there are a lot of marketers that still prefer to use html for esthetic reasons. You may want to experiment with this and decide what suites you best.

4. NEVER purchase or rent email lists. It may be tempting to simply buy a list of email addresses, but remember, if someone has never had any previous contact with you, has never heard of you, and has not requested information from you, then you are spamming them, plain and simple. This course of action will quickly land you on every email black list on the Internet.

5. Avoid SPAM trigger words. Spam filters will flag your email if it uses too many trigger words or phrases that are commonly related to spam marketing. However, don’t be afraid to use some of these words, just use them sparingly. You can find a list of these words by doing a search for ‘spam triggers’ on any search engine.

6. Follow the CAN-SPAM laws. These laws apply to all commercial email and include items such as including a physical mailing address of the person or company sending the email and containing an unsubscribe link in every email as well as. You should review these laws and become accustomed to writing your emails based around them.

Don’t risk having your emails accidentally flagged as SPAM. Follow these easy steps to ensure your emails get passed the filters and reach your subscribers.
