Five Tips for Startup Businesses

Now is a great time to chase your dreams and open the business you have always wanted. But unfortunately too many people never dream about the details, the important parts that make a business successful. You can achieve your dream but it has to exist in reality. Here are five tips that will help any small business startup along the way.

Know why you need a website. Why do businesses have websites? There are many answers to that question but the one that matters most is your own. Maybe you need to sell product online. Maybe you need to provide your customers product/service info, or maybe you just need to have contact information available with a customer service page. What you do need is the right website for your small business. The more intricate of a site the more money it will cost you; your site should only provide what you need to be successful and please your customers.

Understand your Web Hosting needs. Assess your needs: How much bandwidth will you need? How many email accounts will you need? Will you need an online store? Do you need an extensive site with many pages or just a homepage with contact info? Once you find out your needs, you need to address cost. The thing about cost is that many Web Hosts will charge you $5 to $10 more than others for identical packages. I suggest you figure out your needs and then try to find the most affordable Host that will meet the. One that comes to mind is TheBlueKingdom.com. They have plans at $3.99 that will fit all the needs of a small business at a fraction of the cost of many other hosts. Another good resource is Web Hosting Geeks, where you can read hosting articles and compare hosts.

Have a plan. If you don’t have a business plan it will be obvious to potential customers, especially if they have ever owned a business. Your business plan is the heart and soul of your operation. It allows you to know what you want to do and then do it, and it will help you stay on track along the way. There are plenty of resources out there to help you write a business plan. I recommend attending a local networking event to bounce ideas off other small business owners or you can start by checking out The U.S. Small Business Administration website.

Research everything. Who wants to buy your product or service? How much should you sell it for? Who are your competitors? The questions go on and on, and the research takes days and days, but it will determine whether you are successful or not. You need to know who you are and who your competitors are to understand the market. Think of it as soul searching for your business.

Understand Social Media. Twitter is not a place for you to spit out 50 spam messages a day. People will not like you, nor will they respect you. Facebook will not automatically bring you 500 “friends” in a month. You will have to build a network offering something of worth to facebook users, otherwise your page will lie vacant, wasting you time and ultimately money. Social media should only be used if it fits into your business model, if it will create growth for your business and offer something valuable for your customers.
