Motivation is not a problem when you start an online business. Everyone wants a better quality of life, more money and the freedom to do what they want.
But finding the time to turn these dreams into reality is another matter entirely. Especially if you have a job, family or other commitments.
So how do you find the hour or two a day that will make you money? There are four simple steps used by business leaders that can punch holes in your day big enough to build a business in:
Turn off distractions
When working, especially at home, distractions are everywhere. TV, radio, Internet – all conspire to tax your time. So if you can, move away from them. If you have to work at your PC or in the same room as the TV, turn them off. Or better still, cover them up when they are not needed.
TV is the worst offender here – but email can also suck the hours away. So if you don’t need for the jobs you have planned, leave it off.
Organise
One minute spent listing tasks and activities creates a strong focus and stops you from wandering into distracted time wasting. This does not need to be anything fancy – a set of bullet points on a napkin is just as effective as an Outlook Tasks list. Writing down tasks gives you a great hit list to show yourself you are taking the action to get the results you want.
Rank
Now you have a list, spend thirty seconds reading it and ranking the top five most important actions you want to get done. This is critical for two reasons – firstly you will stick to those actions more with laser-like focus. Secondly you are now in a position to see what really matters to making your business a success.
A great extra tip is to prioritise the jobs you like the least. Attacking challenges when your mind is freshest tips the scales in your favour.
Commit
By commitment I mean totally focussing on the tasks at hand. If it is business related, tell your partner you need quiet for a while. But likewise if it is designated family time, enjoy it and don’t be tempted to switch the PC on or check messages. They can wait.
This may sound like a lot – it is not. In a 20 minutes session turning off distractions takes 30 seconds, organisation takes about 60 and ranking takes another 30. That is two minutes that will probably double the output and effective results of your time – that is an outstanding return on investment.
