A frequently asked question by those either considering or new to internet marketing is, “how quickly can I learn”? Aside from the personal education and development required to become a successful marketer, is the knowledge of the various systems and strategies involved. Since someone that is new or considering entering the market is more concerned with the mechanics, we will focus on that.
Much will depend upon, your total online marketing strategy, access to training and tools, your experience, attitude and work ethic.
A few factors to consider:
- Do you intend to set up your own website?
- Do you have access to any training resources?
- How much do you plan to utilize these resources?
- Do you have any prior related experience?
- What is your level of desire for success?
- How much action do you intend to take?
The term internet marketing loosely encompasses many forms of online marketing. The generic use of the term can be confusing and possibly misleading. Just to be clear, we are discussing a strategy using websites with online advertising and/or networking.
Obviously if you are planning on marketing online with a replicated website there won’t be the need for some of the technical knowledge. How you intend to present yourself online will determine the “tools” you will need.
Assuming that you know basically what you need as far as “tools” are concerned, another area will be your actual marketing strategies. To be effective as a marketer you will need to know how to locate and attract your market.
Some areas to consider are:
- Targeting a demographic and marketing to them.
- Generating and capturing leads.
- Educate leads and bring them through a system that accomplishes your intentions.
These are all in depth topics and will just be referenced to give an overall picture. If you are affiliated with an internet marketing business the learning curve could be shortened considerably, depending what they may have to offer through their system.
If you are considering marketing online without any prior experience, and going it alone, be prepared for a long haul. A considerable amount of time will be consumed simply because you don’t know that you don’t know.
In an attempt to learn what you think you must know you will very likely be overwhelmed with information concerning products and services. Some may be necessary and some are not.
As you have probably deduced, there are many variables that can and will affect your learning time.
To summarize; your marketing strategy, availability of training and tools, your experience, your desire to be successful and the amount of action you take will determine the relative amount of time you will need to become proficient.
A marketing business that has an easily duplicated system, allowing anyone to basically “plug in and go” is highly desirable. Add in training, support, mentoring and coaching, and you have the optimal situation.
The advantage is in the possibility of beginning to market in days instead of taking months to build from the ground up.
How long will it take you to learn internet marketing? In the right situation you could conceivably learn enough in one day to begin.
How long will you keep on learning? If you are wise you will never stop.

By: Matthew Toone | 28/11/2009In March 2008, I had an experience that I am positive many of us have had – perhaps several times. It all started with an IDEA in my mind! I had been talking with a friend on the phone and he mentioned something to me that sparked a business idea that I knew would work, and that I was extremely passionate about. However, much like everyone who has good ideas and dreams, I spent too much time listening to the voices of fear and doubt that I thus never acted on those ideas.
