Seattle Movers: Is Your Seattle Mover Licensed and Bonded?

When it comes time to move, its always nice to hire someone to move you rather than trying your luck with your friends and family.  There are many moving companies in the Seattle area that advertise on Craigslist or in the paper.  A simple bit of research can make the difference between a smooth move and a nightmare.

Make sure that the moving company that you hire is licensed with the State of Washington and has posted a bond as required by law.  The Department of Licensing has all of this information available on their internet site.  You can also check the site to see if the company has been the subject of any lawsuits.

You should also check with the moving company to make sure that they carry insurance.  If your furniture is broken, the company can either pay for it on their own or submit it to their insurance company.  In addition, any damage that is caused by the moving truck will be insured.  Some shadier moving outfits do not have proper insurance which can result in you not being compensated quickly or fully for your losses.

A company that is licensed and bonded is also subject to state oversight for safety and regulatory compliance.  At the very least, it means that the company has enough decency to register with the State and is legitimate.  If you decide to use a moving company, you are putting your valuable and furnitures in the hands of strangers.  At the very least, you should know that you are insured against damage and that there is a real company behind the movers that you can sue or file a claim with if you have a problem.
