What is an Entrepreneur? How to Tell if You Could Be One, Too

What is an entrepreneur? A simple enough question on the surface, the definition can be found in any dictionary.  Wikipedia states that "an entrepreneur is one who possesses a new enterprise, venture or idea and assumes accountability for the risks and outcomes."  But really, what does that mean?

Entrepreneurs, at least successful ones, share certain characteristics.

Go-getters
As a lot, entrepreneurs are go-getters.  They aggressively pursue new ideas, keep on top of their fields, read the research and are usually pretty busy – day or night.  

Take Business Seriously
Work is work and play is play and there is no room for crossover.  Successful entrepreneurs understand that their own labors are responsible for their achievements, and they take pains to view their work seriously.  They set hours and stick to them, they put in extra time whenever needed and they commit to the long haul with every venture.

Strategic Planning
Just because you have an idea, doesn't mean you are an entrepreneur.  Great planning is essential to success.  Entrepreneurs plan every step along the path to the outcome they desire.  This map provides specific milestones, which allows you to evaluate your progress, tinker with the overall plan as needed and keeps you on track.  It is a great way to incorporate self-accountability at all points along the way from new idea to great profits.


Promote Themselves Constantly
You may have the best idea in the world, but if you don't promote yourself well, it will never get anywhere.  It is important to point out that you don't promote your product, you promote yourself.  People don't want you to sell them on your product, they want to believe that you love what you do, it brings you success and coincidentally, they can get some too.

Promotion takes the role of speaking about your success, presenting a positive image and sharing your excitement.

Build a Great Team
No one is proficient in every field.  One person may be an excellent promoter and another could be a particularly good web designer.  All sorts of skills are needed to run a business; finding the best people to do the work ensures that your company runs smoothly and profitably.

Develop a Faultless Reputation
This is a situation where your reputation means everything.  As an entrepreneur, you need people to trust your honesty, your proposals and your skills.  Followers will only invest in your ideas if they believe in your reputation, both in business and privately.  Always admit mistakes and fix them promptly.  Be consistent with what you offer, and never miss a deadline or renege on a promise.

Organize, Organize, and Organize Some More
Whether we are discussing your work area, your plan, your to-do list or any other aspect of your business, organization will make the difference between being an entrepreneur and a casual hobbyist.  Each evening you should make a list of what you need to tackle the next day, and follow through.  Devote your work time to moneymaking activities; don't waste time doing anything else.  You can do what you want when you have free time, just not during work.

As you can see, there is more to being an entrepreneur than you might think.  If you believe that you have, or can acquire the previous characteristics and maintain them, you have great entrepreneurial potential.  Don't let it go to waste!
