A Close Look at Oil Rigs

Drilling rigs or oil rigs are used when drilling oil, water, or natural gas from underground reservoirs. Their primary function is to make a hole to extract oil. There are land based rigs and marine based structures. The marine based structure is called a platform. Oil rigs were once semi-permanent structures that were usually left at a site after a well was completed. More expensive, custom-built machines are now used which are capable of being moved from well to well.

Fixed platforms built on concrete or steel legs anchored directly to the seabed are designed for long-term use. Compliant towers, on the other hand, are narrow, flexible towers. They have a pile foundation that supports the conventional deck that is used for oil drilling. Semi-submersible platforms, jack-up platforms, drillships, floating production systems, tension-leg platforms, and spar platforms are some other common types of oil rigs.

The extraction of volatile substances under extreme pressure in a hostile environment can cause frequent accidents to occur. If there is an oil spill disaster, the aftermath can be very damaging to the ecosystem. When birds ingest oil, they may suffer kidney damage, liver alteration, as well as metabolic and hormonal imbalances. Most birds affected by oil spills die unless there is some sort of human intervention. Marine mammals, including seals and sea otters, often suffer a similar fate. Even marine plants are affected, as sunlight can not adequately filter through the oil floating on the water’s surface down to the plants below.

In spite of the care and precaution many companies take, oil spills are inevitable. The only way to save the environment after an oil spill is through an eco-friendly oil spill clean up. With the aid of green products like Oil Gone Easy Marine S- 200, we can restore the environment to its original state even after an oil spill disaster.
