We all contribute to global warming every day. The carbon dioxide we produce by driving our car and leaving the lights on adds up quickly. You may be surprised by how much Co2 you are emitting each year. A growing number of so-called 'carbon footprint calculators' or 'carbon calculators' have been designed by both governments and private enterprise to help you calculate your personal or business impact and learn how you can take action to reduce or even eliminate your emissions of carbon dioxide. There are currently over 150 such calculators on the web alone.
A growing number of experts are claiming that inaccurate calculation of greenhouse gas emissions in particular carbon dioxide, using so-called carbon footprint calculators is undermining the method of using carbon offsetting to combat climate change.
As a result, critics of the system say that those who rely on them may be deceiving themselves that their resulting offset purchases are having their intended effect. And nowhere is the criticism more vociferous than with those calculators that focus primarily on air travel. Carbon offset supporters maintain the system allow individuals to fight climate change without altering their behavior through compensating others to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases on their behalf.
Online travel company Expedia Inc. threw its support behind carbon offsetting on Thursday, allowing its customers to continue traveling exotic destinations with a clearer conscience. But the airlines use a different method to calculate carbon emissions, casting doubt about the credibility of current offset calculators. In June 2008 , The United Nation's International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) unveiled a carbon calculator aimed at standardizing emission calculations by various airlines. However, the model can nevertheless provide misleading results, according to at least one expert, who firmly believes that producing a single number is crude.
A number of examples cited appear to confirm this:
1) If you go from Heathrow to Athens, ICAO gives 217 kilograms (kg) of CO2. That hides huge variations - fly in a full (Boeing) B767 and it's nearer to 160 kg per person, or fly in a half-empty (Airbus) A340 and it's more like 360 kg."
2) A carbon calculator on the British Airways website found 314kg per person of CO2 emissions for a trip from London Heathrow to Athens, whereas a Lufthansa calculation found 260kg per person of CO2 from London Stansted.
Critics of carbon offsetting say the system creates a false impression of fighting climate change, focusing on insignificant efforts such as building wind turbines or planting trees instead of addressing the underlying problem by flying less or burning less coal. Expedia published a survey that revealed the public's ignorance of carbon offsetting. Ten percent of the 2,000 British survey participants believed offsetting meant walking to work instead of driving, with one percent of men believing it meant properly putting out a barbeque. Just one in three understood the true meaning of the term.

What can You Do to Protect Earth's Biodiversity?
By: Anne At Green Community | 17/12/2009Biodiversity refers to the variety of species and habitats that interact to create our planet. Global warming, loss of habitat and of certain species are threatening our very existence. You know you should be recycling and saving water and energy, but what else can you do?
2000 Oil Barrels Eliminated by Solar Power

In order to improve the productivity of your business
By: Manisha | 16/12/2009Before you re-think strategy or start handing out that pink slip (or, conversely, consider hiring a fresh set of MBA's for the next financial term), think again. That creaky air-conditioner, or that 'incorrectly' dangling lock from your cabin door, could really hold the key.
There are several things you should do before you purchase wind generators
By: Paul Ingersole | 16/12/2009Devices such as wind generators are amongst those alternatives. Wind is a renewable resource. As long as there is wind, the generator will make electricity. But unfortunately, these may not be as reliable as traditional generators that run on diesel or gasoline. But when you make the decision to purchase wind generators, you are showing that you are committed to supporting a more environmentally friendly option.

Protect Your Homes from Fuel Oil Spills
By: oil | 15/12/2009Domestic oil spills are caused due to fuel oil tank leakage and automobile tank leakage. Precautionary measures, such as regular inspections of the tanks can help reduce or eliminate domestic fuel oil spills. In case of an oil spill, using biodegradable products, such as Oil Gone Easy S-200 will help.
Nature Reserves Is an Effective Method to Resolve the Climate Change
By: melon | 15/12/2009Climate negotiations are under discussion in Copenhagen and 2010, the year of international biodiversity, is coming. Expanding the range of nature reserves is an effective weapon to resist climate change. Scientific research shows that the nature reserves play an important role in reducing the impact of climate change.
Gobal Warming Induced Heat Waves Are More Deadly Than A Killer Virus
By: James Nash | 14/10/2008 | EnvironmentA record heat wave scorched Europe in August 2003, claiming an estimated 65,000 lives, more than 19 times the death toll from the SARS epidemic worldwide. Heatwaves claim thousands of lives each year, mostly affecting the elderly, the very young, or the chronically ill.
Will Energy-Saving Lightbulbs Help Fight Global Warming
By: James Nash | 11/10/2008 | EnvironmentThe European Union is imposing a ban on conventional light bulbs, replacing them with energy-saving bulbs. This article explores the cost of doing this to the tax payer and whether energy efficient lightbulbs really help in the fight against global warming.

Is The Sun Causing Global Warming?
By: James Nash | 11/10/2008 | EnvironmentA recent documentary aired on the UK's Channel 4 challenged the prevailing political understanding that global warming is caused by man-made activity. The documentary argues that it is in fact the sun that is responsible for the current changes in the Earth's temperature.

Global Warming Skeptics: Why Do They Exist?
By: James Nash | 07/10/2008 | EnvironmentIn the global warming debate, there are essentially two broad camps. One believes that the science is settled, and that global warming is serious and man-made. The other believes that the science is far from settled, and that precious little is known about global warming or its likely effects.
