Albany’s Whaling History

Albany , Australia , is a fascinating destination with rich history. It was chartered by George Vancouver in 1791, although the first European settlements didn’t take place until 1826. Frederickstown (named after Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany) was the first penal colony that was created by the British. By 1832, it was referred to as Albany.

Australia’s first industry was whaling, which was primarily carried out at the base in Albany during the 1840’s. By 1850 it also became a coaling station for the ships that travelled the Indian Ocean. The whaling industry came to an end in 1978. It is now Australia ’s largest woodchip exporting port. However, much of its history was carved out from the whaling era that is prominently regarded today by Whale World.

The famous Whaling Station at Frenchman Bay is now where Whale World calls home, and it has become one of the most meaningful tourist destinations in the area. Visitors are able to learn about the whaling history through a variety of activities. There’s a 3D movie theatre featuring “Giants Exist”, which puts the viewer into the whale’s environment. Visitors can also experience what a whale chase would have been like by embarking on an audio re-enactment upon the Cheynes IV Whale Chaser (one of the ships that carried out whaling activities before whaling came to an end). In fact, there are over 20 exhibitions that teach about the whales, and whaling history.

If you are interested in Albany, the whaling industry’s history, or both you don’t have to physically make a trip to the area. Chris Pash is the author an astounding new book that gives you an in-depth look into the past, and will be available soon. You can visit The Last Whale website to find out more.
