It all started on a brilliantly sunny late morning in July. I was invited out for a spin on a gorgeous 12 foot inflatable. And to be quite honest, I had no idea what to expect.
I mean, the simple moniker "inflatable boats" conjures up images that the inflatable boating world is out there every day trying to dismiss. And to be perfectly honest, they need to a better job...because this was no inflatable boat I was on as the wind way flying through my hair and the boat was slapping against every wave, this was a boat!
With a five piece plywood bottom and two wood "seats" that span across the boat, I was blown away by the agility, the speed and the presence of this inflatable as we screamed around the harbor on Long Island.

We were racing along, unable to hear one another speaking as the inflatable roared across the tops of the white caps. It was amazing. At its top speeds, there is absolutely no difference in the "feel" of the water versus a larger, far more expensive fiberglass boat.
But it is when you pull the engine back take in the scenery that you FULLY appreciate the fact that you are in an inflatable. For it is then that each lap of the water is felt. It is then that the boat takes its cues from the water instead of telling the water how to behave.
To me, it was a much more beautiful experience.
It was pure.
I wildly encourage ANYONE who cannot get past the fact that they are called "inflatable boats" to do exactly what I did and to head out for a test run. I saw a LOT OF FISHERMEN in them, and on the weekends, I expect that I'll see a lot of dads and kids in them.
