With an increasing demand for sustainable and renewable resources to help fight the effects of global warming we begin to look at products that produce positive outcomes for the environment. Did you know that bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet and can produce 35% more oxygen than a stand of trees? Besides being an extremely strong and durable material, bamboo also has the versatility to produce many different types of products that can improve the planet.
Bamboo apparel is one of the fastest growing industries right now because of the harmful effects of wearing chemically produced cottons. Bamboo clothing is particularly good for the environment because of its natural ability to regenerate without harmful chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers. The chemicals used to grow cotton have been linked to ground water contamination and in the pollution of drinking water.
Bamboo vs. Cotton
• Bamboo is a renewable resource that doesn’t require any harmful chemicals to grow. Cotton is the most intensely sprayed crops in the world. The chemicals used to spray these crops have been linked to death and loss of reproductive ability in fish and wildlife.
• Bamboo’s complex root system actually improves the soil and helps prevent erosion. Its dense covering on the forest floor helps to shield harmful UV rays and improves agriculture for years to come. Because cotton needs to be spaced out when planted it allows the soil to bake and oxidize releasing carbon into the atmosphere and decreasing soil fertility.
• Bamboo fibers are biodegradable unlike synthetic cotton fibers that have been sprayed with formaldehyde added to make fabrics wrinkle or flame resistant.
• Bamboo is naturally anti-microbial, soft, durable and is good for your skin. Cotton holds moisture in to the fabric which can cause bacteria to grow and is treated with chemicals that can irritate the skin.
You wouldn’t knowingly eat formaldehyde so why would you put it on your body? Apparel is just one of the many superior products being produced by bamboo today and sold through both retail and wholesale bamboo suppliers. The environmental benefits of bamboo continue to help fight the war on global warming and damaging pollution.
