Six of the top 10 growing careers today didn’t even exist ten years ago. How, then, do we guide our children as they make college study choices? My daughter’s science teacher recently told the class that alternative energy is always a hot topic for science fair judges, and she suggested that students look into that area if it interested them.
One problem with that notion is that the underlying science principles for various types of alternative energy are so different. Approximately one or two new sustainable energy studies are released every week in this country. Their topics range from increased energy efficiency to exploring the potential of renewable resources like solar electricity, wind energy, geothermal energy, and thin-film photovoltaics (whatever that might mean). The science knowledge behind each of these explorations varies widely.
One thing these energy studies have in common is their long-term nature. Many of them refer to full implementation by 2020 or 2030. In order for any form of alternative energy to replace fossil fuels, Americans—and our politicians—will have to commit resources and patience into developing them. Meanwhile, our dependence upon foreign oil weakens us politically.
So what can we do while those alternatives are fully developed? We need solutions for now as well as solutions for later. One immediate solution would be to maximize the natural supplies right here in this country. Thousands of landowners have made money selling mineral rights to companies that develop oil and gas resources. Down the road, they may find that oil and gas royalties give way to geothermal royalties. The utilization of our own vast natural resources, which can be explored without being exploited, can help keep our country stronger internationally while alternative energies are developed.
The first solar-heated house was built in 1939, and two years later a community in Vermont built a wind turbine to supply energy. Yet for a number of years, while oil reserves seemed bottomless, we didn’t focus on developing alternative energies, so now we’re playing catch-up. Today’s young people may work in fields we can’t even dream of right now. In the meantime, we should utilize the mineral rights we have right here and right now while we sustain the patience and motivation required to find alternative solutions for the future.
