Understanding Solar Power

If you traveled out into space and examined many of the satellites currently orbiting the planet, you would see that a majority of them have solar power panels. These are very similar to the panels on a solar powered calculator, motion sensor light and even many highway signs too. The panels contain photovoltaic equipment that converts the energy from the sun directly into electricity. Solar power technology is no longer just a promise of the future, however, and can be found in many different products and locations.

Let’s first look at how a photovoltaic panel is used in everyday consumer goods. The battery-free calculator is something that has been around for a very long time, but there are also many outdoor lighting devices that use nothing but solar power technology to operate. These include spot lights, motion sensor lights, regular pole-mounted lights and pathway lights, among many others. They use a simple photovoltaic panel that is either built-in to the fixture itself, or connected via a long wire. These lights can be used in any weather conditions and rely on LCD bulbs to operate for extensive periods of time without any further maintenance.

There are also photovoltaic panels that are portable and fully collapsible, and that can be taken on such activities as camping, hiking, biking or outdoor excursions. These panels are small, flexible and use solar power technology to provide portable devices like GPS units, cell phones and even MP3 players with the electricity they need to operate for a few days.

Solar power technology is also being put to use for home energy production as well. Since the 1970s millions of home and property owners have looked to photovoltaic cells to provide supplemental energy to their homes, but today that has changed a bit. Now, solar panels are capable of producing almost all of the electricity in a home or building, and also can function as a hot water heating system too.

The advancements in solar power technology for the home have also been expanded into the creation of a wide array of enormous power plants. Some of these use photovoltaic collectors which convert the radiation of the sun directly into electrical supplies and others direct the intense energy of the sun into specially designed towers where water is converted to steam which then spins turbines.

The evolution of the photovoltaic panel and the ever increasing use of solar power technology promises a future in which energy is cleaner, renewable and almost entirely free of charge.
