People have many options that they can take when it comes to using their canister vacuum. Most people use upright vacuums because they have wall to wall carpet in their homes. The canister vacuum is definitely the best choice for people who have either tile or hardwood floors. These canister vacuums are much improved from the older ones used fifty or even twenty years ago. Their suction is still light enough not to do damage but strong enough to work better than in the past. People who use them for their hard floors, though, also often know that they are used for many other applications. This is only one of the many reasons why homeowners buy them in large numbers and make them so popular. Even some people who have wall to wall carpet also own a canister vacuum in addition to their upright cleaning machine. This is done because homeowners can use their canister vacuum to handle area rugs, upholstery, and draperies and their upright vacuum to clean their floors. Upright vacuums have too much suction to clean these kinds of items effectively without damaging them.

By using a canister vacuum, draperies are easily cleaned. It can remove dirt and pet hair quite effectively. Usually, the draperies are left on the rods and the windows while they are cleaned. They just hold the vacuum nozzle up to the draperies and vacuum everything off of them. The draperies are not pulled into the vacuum cleaner with the dirt because of the light suction. This would typically happen with an upright vacuum due to the stronger motor and higher suction power. This is also true for items like tapestries and upholstery. These are often made from very delicate fabrics, especially if they are older pieces that have been passed down through generations of individuals. Homeowners want to keep these kinds of items clean while taking great care not to cause them any damage. With a canister vacuum the damage can be avoided, and the items can be easily cleaned.

With a canister vacuum though, tapestries, draperies, and upholstered items are not the only items that can be cleaned. Area rugs are also often cleaned this way. They can be vacuumed easily while still lying on the floor. If a homeowner would try this with an upright vacuum, the rug could be pulled into the machine. This could damage both the vacuum and the rug, which would be very upsetting to the homeowner. It is easy to avoid these kinds of problems by using the right equipment for the job. Avoiding problems is not that difficult if a person is aware of the differences between vacuums and uses them in a way that speaks to their strengths. Doing this will help to ensure that cleaning chores go as smoothly as possible and provide a homeowner with more time for other pursuits. Paying attention to what kind of vacuum is purchased can be one of the best ways for a person to have more time to do things other than clean his or her home.

As someone who has owned both canister and upright vacuums, I can attest first hand that canisters actually have MORE suction power than uprights. The difference is that a canister vacuum commonly has a means to adjust the suction for cleaning lighter fabrics. I often hear that canisters aren't as good as uprights for cleaning carpeting because of "lighter suction"; again not true. Uprights do a better job than straight-suction canisters on wall to wall carpet because of their rotating brushes. A canister equipped with a power head will work just as well. My upright has a built in accessory hose and on board tools, and cannot suck up pet hair off the couch like my canister does. Why? The canister has more suction.
