How To Teach Your Horse The CounterArc

Posted: May 12, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Teaching a horse to counter arc takes a long time, patience and some knowledge and so it is not a skill that can be immediately picked up by your horse. There are a number of methods to teach your horse this skill and below I have outlined one of the most popular and simplest methods.

It is important that your horse knows how to travel whilst he is bent, and so the first step is t get your horse to walk along a fence and bend his head towards the fence whilst maintaining his walk and cadence. The fence assists in this skill by ensuring the horse continues to move in the desired direction.

From here you gradually ask the horse to move over and away from the fence whist maintaining his head in the bent position. Repeat this exercise along the fence in the opposite direction. Once your horse has mastered this motion along the fence he has the basics to begin to responds to your aids and perform the skills away from the fence. The next progression is do have your horse perform this movement along a straight line (the edge of a dressage arena is ideal).

Many trainers use similar or completely different methods and it is important that you work with your horse's strengths when teaching a new skill, build upon what they can already do. It is pointless trying to teach your horse this movement if he fails to respond to leg aids that encourage lateral movement.

We all know that if you cause a horse to do something then you will get a certain effect. What a lot of people don't understand is how much effect they actually have on a horse. The reality is that every second that you are with your horse you are training him even if you're unaware of it. It is not uncommon for people to try to do something with their horse and actually teach it something completely different, or something they do not want him to do.

According to an expert of the English language, the most frequently used English noun is the word ‘way'. However, in horse training the most frequently used word is ‘whoa'. It is important to be aware of the words we use in training our horses and what meaning we attach to them. We must be careful not to teach our horse to do something based on a verbal command that is not what we want them to do.

When you lead your horse and stop him, try squaring him up. This means his two front feet are directly across from each other and his two back feet are directly across from each other. Squaring up a horse isn't as easy as it may sound. You keep moving them around until you get a foot where you want it, but once you do they move another foot. Then, they're still not squared up.
