Billiards is a great family game. Billiards has a long and wonderful history in the world of games. Billiards began in France around the 15th century. There are many different styles of billiard games today and the differences lie within regions as well. Australian, British, French and American style billiard games differ from each other. There are several different billiard sports. One of the most popular is the game of Eight Ball. The different divisions of billiards are Carom billiards where no pockets are present. Pool, probably the most common and has 6 pockets. Lastly is Snooker which is different from pool and Carom type.

The game has been mentioned in all kinds of literature and art throughout the ages. It is mentioned in Shakespeare, royalty has played it, kings and philosophers have played the game and so many other illustrious movers and shakers throughout history. Every type of billiards is played on a pool table. Each type of billiard may be played on a different pool table. Most pool tables are rectangles and are twice as long as they are wide. There are seven, eight and nine foot tables. Most professional games are played on a nine foot pool table. There are some ten foot tables; these were common many years ago. Not many are manufactured so if a 10 foot table can be found it could be considered an antique and may have value if it is still in good condition. If the table is in poor condition it could be restored and would be a stunning addition to a game room, provided you have the room! All tables are covered with a special cloth. This material feels like felt but is actually a combination of wool or sometimes a wool/nylon.

There is a manufacturer of cloth for pool tables that has been in existence since the mid 1400's! According to manufacturer there is fast play cloth and slow play cloth. The faster the cloth the less friction it has. The balls with a faster cloth will roll faster and farther along. Cloth for competition play is made from 100% wool. The color of the tables varies, but most often it is green. There are blue table covers, red covers and some pool tables have even been in hot pink. Pool, Snooker, Billiards whatever name you call it is one of the longest played sports, crossing cultural lines and has really stood the test of time.
