Precor makes top of the line Elliptical Crosstrainers. If you go to a gym or health club you only find Commercial Fitness Equipment, Commercial Equipment is just like refering to something as industrial strength. Meaning its meant to be used and abused while still performing to the highest of standards. You wouldn't find a Home Elliptical at the gym. That all said, When you go to your gym you'll find Precor Ellipticals most of the time. Precor Ellipticals are the choice within the Industry, If your wiling to pay the extra price you will not be disappointed. Precor makes a few different models of ellipticals, They have the Precor 546 Elliptical, Precor 556 Elliptical and the Precor 576 Elliptical, and every few years they come out with a new version just like you see with cars. So it can get confusing as to what model and version you want and need. Below I will lay out the ellipticals and give you some info on each.
Precor EFX 546 HR Elliptical - Adjustable CrossRamp This model is the only elliptical machine that allows the user to vary muscle involvement by increasing or decreasing ramp incline, changing ramp resistance, changing foot placement on the footplates or by going forward or backward. (No Arm Movement)
Precor EFX 556 HR Elliptical - Arm Movement On the EFX, you stride smoothly while holding the handrails or moving your arms in natural sync, with or without hand weights. (Fixed Crossramp)
Precor EFX 576 i Elliptical - Adjustable CrossRamp and Arm Movement This elliptical features the moving arms of a cross-trainer with a cross-ramp adjustable from 13 to 40 degrees and 14 programs.
If you can't afford the Precor 576i Elliptical you must decide what you'd rather have Arm Movement or an Adjustable Crossramp, That is really the only difference between the 546 and the 556 the 576 has both.
In the big scheme of things owning any Precor elliptical is better than 99% of the other elliptical brands out there (excluding Life Fitness). Don’t let others fool you into thinking that their private label off-brand elliptical is as good as a Precor. Think of it like this, what brand do you see in your local health club? Chance are that most users are using a Precor so don’t take a chance with an elliptical purchase stick with the brand you know and trust, Precor.
