"I see and approve the good things, but I follow the worse ones."

Ms. Sofia went to work as she used to do every morning, and during a 20 minutes’ pleasant walk between her house and the company, she remembered a very interesting movie watched the day before about when the Christians crusaders lost Jerusalem to the Muslims, in the year 1187 A.D.

But it was not the historical context that called her attention, but the moral and conduct values that, at least in theory, was expected from a knight. In a scene where a young man was ordered Knight, one of the requirements of his oath was always saying the truth, even if that could cause his death. Suddenly she thought about the business environment and noticed some boredom.

It wasn’t so long she was helping a client of her to get a new project, and once more she was a witness of all that empty and untruly speech that the salesman, wearing an angelical face that could deceive even the saints, swore to be the purest expression of truth. That situation was very unpleased to her but she couldn’t deny her client’s representative without causing the loss of the project and injury the image of the company.

"Video meliora, proboque, deteriora sequor". (*) That was the thought that went into her mind. Where would be ethics and moral values?

How many of us during our lives and careers have faced similar situations, sometimes without noticing that nowadays it seems to be so usual? Who has never heard something like: "The customer doesn’t need to know that, change these numbers and make it fast. If someday someone complains, then we fix it”?

For sure there are professionals and companies that base their actions and decisions on ethics, but there are also those ones who only use that word as a base to a marketing game in order to cause a false image, distinct of what they really are. Wherever we are, there’ll always be people and companies of both kinds, and each of them will try to extend their influences upon us, hoping to get a new follower to their ideas and principles.

There is no way to avoid this contact, but everyone is free to decide which principles and influences to accept, and in front of the inflexible judge of their own conscience, it is not possible to argue that virtue was not appropriate in a specific situation, or that we acted in a particular way because someone has told us to do so.

We are the only responsibles for our actions and its consequences. What will we choose?
