And the action just does not stop at Flushing Meadows where the last players standing in the female tournament, the American Serena Williams and the Serbian Jelena Jankovic met last night after almost two weeks of consecutive games, each player had to face six different rivals in order to arrive to the Grand Slam final which was played at the Arthur Ashley stadium.
It was an incredible night as the opening match was - part two - of the previous evening encounter between the Spaniard world number one, Rafa Nadal and the Scott Andy Murray which had been called off due to bad weather. This was indeed a night to remember not just for us the tennis fans but for the players, for the 23-year-old Serbian this became her maiden Grand Slam final and despite her hard work to take the title her nerves betrayed her game more than once.
On the other hand, everyone’s favourite the youngest Williams’ sister imposed herself on the court taking the two sets by 6-4 and 7-5 in a flawless fashion that impressed us very much. Nevertheless, she had to work her way to the trophy as Jankovic did not give in so easily, both players shared multiple rallies but Serena’s seniority quickly showed as her serve and forehand became better and better.
In approximately two hours and four minutes Serena Williams became the 2008 US Open Grand Slam winner and the new WTA world number one female tennis player while collecting USD 1.5 million dollars. Runner up Jankovic remains in the second position, and besides her not so bad check of USD 750,000 Jelena also won the crowd at Flushing Meadows as she received standing ovations for her game, humble speech and the support given to her American rival.
The last game of the men’s semi final between Nadal and sixth seeded Andy Murray which began Saturday at the Louis Armstrong court ended with the Briton’s victory in four sets. For many of us, one of the major upsets of the tournament mainly after the way Nadal had played at previous Grand Slams such as the French Open, Wimbledon and even the Olympics. There is no doubt Murray was superior, he knew exactly what to do and he wisely nailed the first two sets with a blast of aces while the Spaniard geared up a bit during the third and by the fourth Murray just sealed the game for his first Grand Slam final.
The 2008 ATP Tour has been Nadal’s golden year and we believe he deserves to be in the number one position, but his task is tough as being number one means to proof himself constantly. Now, that a new era in the sport has began with new talent growing we will see how the season’s ends and how the pieces move in the world rankings.
