Most people know what camouflage is, but they aren't necessarily familiar with a specific type of camouflage called a "ghillie suit." A ghillie suit is a relatively modern type of camouflage that has only been around for the last 100 years or so.
In traditional camouflage, the clothing is colored to match the surrounding environment, usually with different colored areas on the clothing overlapping. There are different color palletes for different environments, for example, white and light greys used for snow or winter camouflage, browns and tans used for desert camouflage, and greens and browns used for woods or forest camouflage.
A ghillie suit takes this concept one step further: instead of just using colors to blend it, it uses shapes and materials as well. A ghillie suit makes the wearer look like a walking bush or tree. The suit is made from a poncho or other base piece of clothing and covered with burlap, twine, twigs, leaves, and branches. A person wearing a ghillie suit can hide in with bushes or trees and go completely unnoticed. Not only do the colors blend in perfectly, but the human shape is eliminated as well, which is one of the biggest advantages it provides. The human eye recognizes shape so even if he is wearing camouflage, a person will still be identified if he gives off the shape of a human. But a ghillie suit removes this element and allows the wearer to practically hide in plain sight and still go unnoticed.
For this reason, ghillie suits have become popular with military snipers, but also with hunters and among some serious paintball players who are looking for that extra advantage.
