In spite of the substantial price tags attached, designer shoes are ever popular among women. Men can, of course, unleash their inner Imelda Marcos and indulge themselves with a shoe shopping spree, but designer shoes are much more popular among women. Why is this so and what explains the popularity of such expensive footwear?
For many people, designer equals desirable. The high cost is seen as synonymous with style and quality; if it is expensive, then it must be good. Perhaps a greater factor is that in this era of frequent exposure to celebrity style through magazines and the internet, women are bombarded with photos of actresses and models wearing the latest designer shoes and clothes. This leads to an inspirational desire to own what they own; no longer is it enough to imitate the style of the stars, but women want to own the very same items.
Of course, this is in a way quite understandable. We may live in a throwaway age, but there is still pleasure to be had in owning a pair of designer shoes. The workmanship is of far greater quality than with a high street pair costing a fraction of the price. It may seem ridiculous to spend hundreds of pounds on a single pair of shoes, but the owner possesses a beautiful object that will add that extra ´something’ to an outfit. The latest ´must-have´ in designer shoes are the shoe-boot styles with cut-out heels, backs or toes, a new twist on the peep-toe shoe, as seen from Christian Louboutins. Jimmy Choo fringed sandals have captured many a fashionista Herat, and gladiator sandals are to be seen everywhere. Thanks to the imagination of designers, 21st Century footwear is far from boring.
