Amber is considered a gemstone or a semi-precious stone and is the name that refers to tree sap or fossil resin which is basically appreciated for its color. This stone is also used for the manufacturing and production of different jewelry pieces and other ornamental objects. Most of the amber that exists toady would be in the range of around 30 to 90 million years old. Sub-fossil amber or semi-fossilized resin is also called copal.
Amber is a translucent and fossilized tree resin that comes from the extinct conifers during the Tertiary period. They are typically yellow gemstones; however, they could also come in varying shades of green, golden orange, violet, black and red. It also sometimes contained the bodies of small trapped insects and were found along the Baltic Sea’s and the Dominican Republic’s southern shores.
When amber is rubbed, it has a tendency of giving off static electricity. This is why the name amber was actually derived from the Greek word meaning electricity. It is a soft gemstone measuring only a hardness of 2.5 on the Moh’s scale.
