IF ONLY....

Chapter 1

Sitting alone by the banks of the river, Delomi began to weep. She wept for a long time and anytime she remembered her parents and her siblings, she wept the more. They had all be killed in the war that occured in the village only three days ago and she was the only person in her family who survived.

Delomi didn't know what to do now. For the past three days she hadn't tasted anything. She had cried all day and she was starving. "O mama why did you do this to me? Why didn't you take me with you? O papa, O Selenu, O....", she wept. Suddenly, an arm clung to her, she shivered, turning her face she saw auntie Alayu.

Auntie Alayu had been her mother's best friend. Her sons had also been killed in the war "O Delomi, don't weep anymore, from the look of your face, I can see that you havn't eaten. Come and let me get you some porridge." They went into auntie Alayu's weak hut that had been almost destroyed during the war.

For some months now, Delomi had been staying with her mother's friend. She had been like a mother to her. Now their village was being built again by some foreigners who wanted to take over the village. The foreigners were very cruel and they made the villagers work harder than their strength could do. They gave them very little food and most of  the villagers had run to other villages. Delomi and auntie Alanu had also planned to run away and this night they were going to put their plan into action.

Delomi and and her new found mother had barely crossed the river that served as the borther between their village and the village of Selewere when they heard a voice shouting behind them. They took to their heels until they reached the other village. But it was just a young boy crying because he was being tormented by the foreigners.

Tired after their long journey, they rested under a big baobab tree. They ate the little food that they had brought with them. After some rest, they started exploring the new village that they had come to.

Watch out for chapter 2 of this story.

Although Veiled in a Sunlit Haze incorporates the epic sweep of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and the textured complexity of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, it has a character and flavor all its own. This novel delights readers with the best aspects of a heroic quest, while also challenging readers to confront more philosophical ideas about the nature of power and family, loyalty and responsibility.
