If only (Chapter 2)

CHAPTER 2

After exploring the village for sometime, Delomi and her guardian became tired and very hungry. They sat by the street and began to beg for alms. It was getting late in the night but still they hadn’t got a penny. “Hmm, the people in this village have no compassion for the poor.” Delomi muttered. Suddenly, out of the blue, some wicked–looking men appeared. One quickly pointed a machine gun at the beggars while one tied them up.

Delomi and auntie Alayu were taken to an abandoned building. The men released them but locked the door and left. They slept on the hard concrete floor all night. They couldn’t shout for help because one of the men had stayed in the room and guarded these poor people all night, ready to shoot at them if they dared make a noise.  In the morning, these evil-looking men came to give their victims little food. After eating, they were ordered to either undress or get shot. The beggars undressed and the men had illicit affair with them. In fact they really used the poor beggars to their satisfaction. They indeed had a field day.

After their ordeal, Delomi and her auntie were released .But they were warned strictly not to mention anything to anybody about their ordeal. As soon as they were released the two beggars started weeping bitterly. They cried and cried till their heads ached. They later went back to their alms-begging job.

Two weeks after their ordeal, Delomi found out that she was pregnant. Auntie Alayu had noticed this too. They however kept quiet on the matter. Delomi was growing thinner and thinner and weaker and weaker each passing day due to the fact that she had an additional person to carry and also the food she ate every day was not enough due to the little money she had.

For months now, Delomi and her guardian depended on alms-giving as their daily source of income. But now, they had decided to look for a more suitable job. The money they got from begging was not able to cater for them and the unborn baby. Delomi and auntie Alayu therefore began to work as porters.
