Mega Millions is a large multi-state lottery in the United States. With lotteries from Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Virginia, Mega Millions has a huge population base that plays the game.
Mega Millions was formerly called the Big Game. Jackpots in Mega Millions can reach hundreds of millions of dollars. Players who match all six numbers in a Mega Millions drawing win the jackpot. Standard second prize for matching the first five numbers is $175,000. There are nine ways to win.
Since May 2002, Mega Millions advertised jackpots have started at US $12 million paid over 26 years, increasing when there is no jackpot winner. Reflecting common practice among American lotteries, the jackpot is advertised as a nominal value of annual installments.

A lump sum (cash value) option, when chosen by a jackpot winner (see below), pays the approximate present value of the installments. Mega Millions is drawn every Tuesday and Friday, including all holidays.
When the prize is unusually high, it draws a lot of attention and additional players who hope to get their share of the large jackpot. Even people that usually don't play the lottery feel tempted to risk a few bucks.
The publicity that larger jackpots get from local newspapers and TV stations helps to bring in even more players. It's kind of a positive catch 22.
