Making it through college on a tight budget can be pretty rough, but if you can follow these tips on how to shop on one, then you should be able to make it, almost no matter what kind of budget you have set for yourself.

If you celebrate birthdays or Christmas, make sure your family knows that you would like practical items (or even just plain cash) for these events. Most families will gladly give you what they know you need instead of what you want, although some members may be a little hard headed and only give you what they want you to have.

When you go grocery shopping, make sure you have already eaten first. One of the worst things that you can do is go shopping (any kind of shopping) while you are hungry. You will end up buying more than you need and probably a lot of junk and pre-processed foods. Junk food, pre-processed foods, and frozen dinners are all very expensive and unhealthy compared to their freshly prepared counterparts. One of the greatest things you can learn to do for yourself and for your family (and future children, if you want to have any) is cook. Cooking is a great skill to have and if you can become pretty good at it, you can save a lot of money that you would have spent on expensive canned soups and frozen TV dinners.

Something else to consider is when you go and buy groceries (or other items in the grocery store), try to buy them in bulk if you know that you are going to end up using them and they will not spoil. This applies to items like paper towels and toilet paper. If you have a good amount of freezer space, there are a lot of food items that you can buy on sale and then freeze to use at a later date. Take advantage of sales as long as you know what you buy will not go to waste.

If you need to decorate your living space on a budget, shop around at thrift stores and flea markets. There are a lot of great items that can be found at these places, even if they do need a little bit of TLC. Look around online and research how to refinish wood furniture that only has some light cosmetic damage. And hey, even if you cannot make it look completely new, it will just give the piece character.
