Career and Self-Development: Polishing up One's Teaching Skills

Disillusionment at the starting point of one's teaching career Due to the present day social economic situation one can hardly find heaven-born teachers. Nowadays this profession is ill-paid and not honorable. Responsibilities for underachieving students are shifted on educators. Notwithstanding the fact that present day schools are better than ever, the level of the teachers' stress is higher. Nonetheless, teachers aimed at making a career catch opportunities for enhancing their proficiency. Graduating from college and starting their career at school educators get rid of rose-colored glasses. Several years of work at school are enough for a young teacher to weigh all pros and cons of one's profession. Inexperienced specialists are often disillusioned. They have been dreaming to work with talented and grateful children. In reality they have to waste their time writing numerous lesson plans and filling in reports. Ways for improving one's teaching skills Recovering from the effects of the primary shock, teachers start realizing their potential. Having obtained skills of maintaining discipline in class, educators think about the ways for enhancing the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process. They notice that it is possible to manipulate the variables of the students' achievements implementing different methods and tactics. It might be difficult for a beginner to choose the most effective teaching strategies. Receiving invaluable experience teachers realize the importance of further polishing up their professional skills. The most effective ways to enhance one' proficiency are • conducting experimental researches; • reading the current periodicals covering the educational problems; • participating in professional conferences and debates; • adopting the colleagues' experience; • going with the times and implementing the innovative tactics. Enhancing the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process will have positive impact on students' achievements. At the same time it will increase the teachers' satisfaction with their professional activity.
