Coin Grading Services are Few and Far Between

The one really good thing that I can tell you about coin grading and coin grading services is that you should never put your whole trust in grading services. This can only invariably lead to disappointment. Not all coin grading companies were created equal, and quite a few of them are more than not inferior. There are of course a few top coin grading services, but unfortunately for the moment, these are few and far between.

You could of course learn coin grading yourself, which is not all that difficult if you’re willing to dedicate your time to learning the ins and outs of coin grading. Then again if you’re only going to learn enough to get you by in the beginning and pick up a few things here and there as you go along, this will also work for you.

But perhaps before we go any further you’d like to know what coin grading is all about? That might be actually better than jumping the gun and not having any clear idea on what coin grading is. I know that I’ve been talking about it here and there up to this point, but here then is something as close to a concise explanation as I can get!

Coin grading in short, is the practice of assessing a particular coin and assigning it a grade. What the grade is that you assign to a coin depends on what scale of grading you use. There isn’t as yet one fully common coin grading standard which can be assigned to coins. Instead there are a few different accepted methods and what is used depends on a few factors.

However, after a grade is assigned, the coin then carries with it that value which is assigned to that grade. This also depends on numerous other factors as well, and as you go through coin magazines and books, you’ll see that for the same grade, different coins will fetch different prices.

This is in and of itself alright as coins, just like coin grading services, weren’t created equal in the grand scheme of things. Some coins will fetch a handsome price for the simple fact that it might be rare, while a different coin at the same grade which is not as rare will fetch a lower price.

coin grading involves many factors, and these start with the luster of the coin, and progress on through the state of the coin as in wear and tear, and go onto examine such things as scratches and abrasions. Then of course, the coin will need to be examined for such things as errors, mis-strikes, and other such things. Then it will need to be assessed for its rarity as well as a few other things. After all of which a grade will then be assigned and your coin will carry with it a value for it.

Although the whole process coin grading sounds precise and even scientific, it’s really neither of these things. There is a lot of room for individual interpretation of the state of the coin. And in truth you’ll find that many coin grading companies take a very liberal view on coin grading and grade coins too high. This can lead you to believe that your coin is worth more than it really is, and can also cause you to pay more than you would for the same if it had been graded more conservatively. And that’s why you shouldn’t put all your trust in a claim that a coin has been graded for such and such a grade.
