Current accounts are one of those things that get used in day-to-day life without even thinking about it. Money is drawn from cash machines, debit cards are used to pay for goods and direct debits or standing orders can be used to settle regular bills. A current account is an essential part of modern living so it makes sense to ensure you have chosen the right account for your requirements.
It is always worth doing a review of your finances as what may have been the ideal option twelve months ago may not be so relevant now and you need to make sure your bank account can adapt to the changing demands of daily life.
First and foremost a current account is necessary for most of the basics in life. If you work in the United Kingdom you usually need a bank account that your wages can be paid into. If you want to rent a property then a bank account is usually essential so a standing order can be set up to manage the payment of rent.
Cash is no longer the only way of paying for products and services. Debit cards, cheques and bank transfers are common fare and a current account is necessary for all these methods of payment.
Having a current account also enables you to transfer money to other accounts so you can control your finances with ease. Direct debits can be set up so you can pay bills, such as council tax, gas or telephone, every month without having to visit the bank or post office.
Direct debit facilities also ensure your bills are settled on time each month so you need never worry about paying a bill late again and red reminder letters will become a thing of the past. This can even help your credit rating as your credit history is partly based on your ability to manage your finances effectively, including timely settlement of bills and payment plans.
The type of current accounts available vary depending on the bank you use and the exact account you opt for but as a general rule a current account comes with a cash/debit card which allows you to withdraw money from a cash machine as well as pay for goods using the chip and pin service. Some accounts will see you issued with a cheque book which can also be a handy means of settling your bills.
If you require an overdraft facility to get you through the month then this is a feature worth looking out for when shopping around for current accounts. Depending on the current accounts and introductory offers available you may be able to benefit from interest free overdrafts for a certain time period, such as one year. The amount of overdraft offered varies depending on which bank you use so shop around for the most competitive deal.
