Dealer Incentives: Claim Your Cash

Dealer or manufacturer incentives are not the same thing. Make sure you get what’s coming to you when shopping for a new car, truck or SUV.

Manufacturer incentives listed in car ads, seen on TV and blasted over the radio are common and change quickly. These are the offerings by auto manufacturers that are passed directly on to you. Manufacturer incentives can take the form of rebates, discounts or low interest rates on loans. They do their job. They get consumers into the showrooms to take advantage of the savings.

There is another incentive manufacturers often dish out that most consumers do not know about, however; the dealer incentives. Dealer incentives are also given by the manufacturer but are given not to you, but to the dealer. They are incentives or rewards for pushing a certain model. It is up to the dealer, then, whether to pass this incentive on to you.

Now before you rush out to claim your money there are a couple of things you should know. First, like manufacturer incentives, dealer incentives change frequently. If sales are good the dealer incentive may not be offered. Also, dealer incentives may not be offered on popular models, but a slow selling model may carry a big one. Finally, dealer incentives vary by the area of the country you live in. Knowing this it might be wise to take an internet road trip to find the best deal, and then bicker for the dealer incentive.

Here is an example of dealer and manufacturers incentives. On the day this article was written Cadillac was offering a $1000 incentive directly to buyers on one of its models. But, in addition, they were offering some dealers $2500 to get the car out the door. At the same time Cadillac was giving an additional $750 to United States Automobile Association members. That’s $4,250 in savings waiting for you to claim. Did you ever see anything like this advertised in the show room? Probably not, so do your homework and find out what’s available.

So, before you walk into the showroom do a little homework. Well respected auto industry consultant, Cory Mosley, says, “There are ways to find out ahead of time what incentives are currently being offered on the models you are considering. When you find this out you can surprise the dealer with your knowledge if you don’t feel you are getting the best deal.”
