Edinburgh is not only well known as a fantastic destination for theatre, visual arts and cultural entertainment - it also has a reputation as a top place to enjoy a great meal. Dining out in Edinburgh can be a wonderful experience, and the capital is popular for the sheer range of restaurant choices it affords visitors. However, with so many eateries packed into one little city it can be hard to decide which restaurants are most likely to provide the best dishes - do a little research before you book your seats and ensure you enjoy a fabulous meal in Edinburgh.

As with many cities, Edinburgh is home to a huge breadth of different restaurants - and these range from the humble chip shop to an exquisite fine dining experience. Deciding where to eat can often first mean consulting your budget, as price can often be directly related to quality - although there are a number of Edinburgh establishments able to offer delicious dishes at decent prices. If you are hoping to dine out for less, the Newington and Marchmont areas of Edinburgh are an excellent choice, as a high concentration of students ensures the process remain reasonable.

If you're looking to enjoy some of Edinburgh's excellent sights and Old Town atmosphere, then consider booking a restaurant on or near the city's Royal Mile. Then again, if you'd like to enjoy some of the city's more modern offerings, George Street and Leith are great places to get a feel for the new Edinburgh. Wonderfully regenerated in recent years, the waters of Leith offer relaxing views and seafood is a speciality. Anyone who can't decide which side of Edinburgh they'd most like to see will be glad to know that the relatively compact size of the city means you can easily get from one side to the other - the perfect way to work up an appetite between lunch and dinner.

Choosing to enjoy fine dining at some of Edinburgh's fine luxury hotels can be a great way to ensure the quality of your experience, as hotels often boast excellent service as well as top chefs and extensive menus. Many of the more popular restaurants in the city fill up quickly however, so if you're planning on sampling the cuisine of the capital it's a good idea to make sure you book ahead. Don't dismay if you find your first choice is full however, as there are so many Edinburgh restaurants you're sure to be able to secure a spot in an equally wonderful alternative.
