Online survey reveals cuts in government spending the most popular way to cut government debt
Government cuts were one of the biggest talking points of 2010, and are likely to continue through 2011 as the British Government strives to remedy its debt. But while reducing spending in many areas has inevitably proven unpopular with certain groups, a recent online survey revealed that spending cuts are the most popular measure of curbing the deficit by consumers.
Despite a previous poll revealing that opinion was equally divided on whether government cuts are good or bad for the economy, the situation is increasingly favouring the former option. While reducing spending in areas where money is needed most is never an easy decision to make - particularly in areas such as the NHS, schools or housing schemes - others are being greeted more favourably, such as government cuts to the BBC and some public sector jobs.
While any cut in spending tends to be greeted with some controversy, online surveys seem to suggest that the British public is becoming more accustomed to the idea that such cuts are necessary and even inevitable - particularly following several years of financial hardship during the recession. This may mean that the coalition government is in a better position to make cuts than the previous leadership, with Chancellor George Osborne's proposed cuts being deemed appropriate by more survey respondents than previously, where they were judged to be 'too harsh.'
Online surveys have revealed that some areas of spending cuts are still less popular than others, particularly those perceived as targeting the vulnerable. These include the proposed plans to slash social housing budgets by £4 billion and increase social rents to 80 per cent of market levels, with organisations such as the National Housing Federation vocally opposing the move.
It's not just budgetary issues that are dividing public opinion over the coalition government either, with justice secretary Kenneth Clarke's policy of reducing jail sentences in favour of community sentences being opposed by 60 per cent of survey respondents. A larger 80 per cent of respondents opposed the notion of rail fares being permitted to increase faster than inflation.
The government itself has reacted negatively to such criticism however, with Nick Clegg viewing some reports as 'distorted' in their views of spending cuts. Mr Clegg's party has also fallen in popularity since the election according to a recent poll, though the Conservatives under David Cameron are still ahead of the opposition - being viewed as the most trusted party to reduce the country's deficit by 50 per cent of respondents.
