Seven Ways to Save on College Education

Many people graduate from college owing thousands of dollars in student loans. It isn't uncommon for students to graduate owing $30,000 to $40,000. For people that get married shortly after graduation that means starting out with around $80,000 in debt. Thats a lot of debt for a young couple just looking to buy a house and possibly replace their aging vehicles.

While you may not be able avoid taking out a loan for college, here are six tips to help minimize the cost of your college education.

1. Choose an affordable school. Quality of education is not directly related to the cost of education. Usually you have several options cover various price ranges. State schools are partially funded by the government, so they are often less expensive.

2. Consider changing your residency. Most state schools offer greatly reduced rates for residents. Depending on what is required to establish residency, it might be work moving before starting college in order to get the less expensive tuition.

3. Take a summer job. Getting a summer job that can give you lots of work hours can significantly reduce the amount you need to take out in student loans. You have to save the money you earn in order to have it available for school expenses. If you can find a job that is related to your area of study, it will not only help you financially, but help make you a better student as well. Ideally find a job where they can use your help when you are on spring and Christmas break.

4. Look for scholarships. Many scholarship programs have been cut back in recent years, but there is still money available. Check with your financial aid department. Also check with your professors. They often know of scholarships that are handled on a departmental level instead of through financial aid.

5. Try to get a job tutoring. Work study usually is not at a very high pay rate, but getting paid to teach your favorite subject will often make you a better student while giving you some extra money for expenses.

6. Consider the total cost. Don't just look at the cost of tuition when evaluating a school. Keep in mind other factors. If a nearby school would enable you to live at home, it might be much less expensive than a distant school with cheaper tuition. If you would not need a vehicle at one school, it might be much less expensive than on that would require your own transportation.

7. Consolidate college debt. Once you've graduated look for programs that will let you consolidate any debt that you have at a low interest rate. This will allow you to put more money toward the principle and pay it off quickly.

One Laptop Per Child
By: yeddascott | 06-11-2007
I'm intrigued by the Give 1 Get 1 offer from One Laptop Per Child (OLPC).  I've seen both positive and negative comments about the XO computer.  Is it worth buying the XO-1 for my child to use -- in a few years, when she's old enough to appreciate it -- and for another child to use now?  Or should I wait for the XO-2 or some other alternative?

Teachers and sexual misconduct with their students?? what's up?!?!?!
By: PracticalThinker | 02-11-2007
Authorities searched Thursday Nov. 1 for a 13-year-old boy and a female middle school teacher believed to be on the run from central Nebraska after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship.Kelsey Peterson, 25, a sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was placed on administrative leave last week. A judge issued an arrest warrant Monday charging her with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.Court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters in which the two professed their affection for one another. In letters, the boy called Peterson his "Baby Gurl" and said their relationship was "just not about the sex but that it was pretty good," according to court documents. Court documents say Peterson's school-issued laptop contained letters to the student, including one from April saying she loved him, thought he loved her, was "100 percent faithful" to him and would always be faithful. This is not the first time a teacher has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a student. There was Debra Lafave who was sentenced to house arrest and probation in 2005 after pleading guilty to charges that she had sex with a 14-year-old student. There was Wendie Schweikert, 37, who pleaded guilty to having sex with an 11-year-old student and in March 2007 was sentenced to 10 years in prison. There was Aaron Brevik, an elementary teacher and principal from Michigan, who was convicted of criminal sexual conduct in 2005 and is serving 5 to 20 years after being accused of using a hidden camera to film students in the gym locker room. There was the notorious Mary Kay Letourneau, who served a seven-year sentence for having sex with student Vili Fualaau, when he was 12. (She left her husband and 4 children to be with Fualaau.) They had two children and wed in 2005. In 2005, Pamela Rogers received an eight-year sentence for having sex with a 13-year-old student. She later sent suggestive photos to the boy and got two years added. Pamela Smart received a life sentence for plotting to kill her husband after he was shot in 1990 by a 16-year-old student with whom she had a relationship. And after her relationship with a 16-year-old student resulted in a pregnancy in 2004, Rebecca Boicelli went on maternity leave during the police investigation and found a job at another school nearby. Now my question..is there an epidemic going on here? What makes these adults think it's ok to have sex with CHILDREN????Do you think if these people were given real prison time (like 20 years to life), this kind of insanity would stop?
