It seems like everywhere we turn we see advertisements for companies offering to repair our credit. They make claims about how quickly they can do this and how perfect things will be once they have done their work. The trouble is, in order for these companies to help you, you will probably have to pay a hefty fee. You are also turning over control of your finances to an outside party. The fact of the matter is, you can use the techniques of do it yourself credit repair and take the situation into your hands.

Before you undertake your do it yourself credit repair program you need to have a clear idea of where you stand. The best way to do this is by gathering copies of your credit reports. Depending on where you live, there may be two or three major credit agencies keeping track of your credit score. Get your hands on copies of all these reports. As hard as it is to believe, the credit agencies don’t always share the information they have on your report. The only way you can determine where to start in your do it yourself credit repair is to have all the information. Undertake a thorough analysis of these reports so that you’ll know exactly where your trouble lies.

As you are reviewing your credit report, keep track of anything that you may be incorrectly reported. Once your do it yourself credit repair key tasks will be to get inaccurate or falsely reported information clarified or removed from your credit reports. This will not be easy and you need to be prepared to have proper documentation. You may need to be persistent but you will be able to have these items corrected. Just one bounced check or one bill that is late can make a significant difference. Even if an item is incorrectly reported you will be considered responsible for them until you get them removed. Be prepared to dispute items that you think are incorrect.

One of the most important aspects of your credit report is your payment history. You should focus on cleaning up any overdue accounts that may be dragging down your credit history. A key goal of your do it yourself credit repair should be to bring all your accounts up to date. You also want to work your debt down to a reasonable amount in relation to your income. A good rule of thumb for debt to income is approximately 30%. This is a common benchmark and is a good target for you to work toward in your do it yourself credit repair program.

The best thing you can do to improve your credit is to make sure the information in your credit report is accurate, pay your bills on time, and carry a reasonable amount of debt. If you can do this then your do it yourself credit repair will be active. You will need to practice a little patience though since you didn’t get into credit trouble over night. You won’t get out of it over night either. But you can create and execute an effective do it yourself credit repair plan.
