You must already know at this point what identity theft is. Basically the crime where someone steals your personal information and then proceeds to assume your identity to use it for a good number of things, identity theft is really one of the scariest things that can happen in a person's life.
This is why everyone is being alerted and advised to take action and protect themselves from the destructiveness of this crime. This is also why information on how you can go on about a personal identity theft check has already been in circulation for years now.
But in order to fully understand the weight of this crime, it is important that you understand what being a victim of identity theft can do to you. Apart from having someone else using your name for whatever activity that you may never even imagine yourself doing is scary enough, it doesn't stop there. There are lots of other things that can happen to you once your identity has already been assumed by somebody else with malicious intentions.
One example would be what some calls credit identity theft or credit fraud. This may be one of the most popular reasons why people commit identity theft crimes, because credit cards on other people's names are the easiest ways to get stuff for free. This form of identity theft can affect you the most, as you will be charged for whatever the thieves have charged under your name.
This can cause a lot of undesirable consequences for you and your family. First of which will be financial loss. It has been proven that credit identity theft can cause bankruptcy with the high interest rates of some credit companies. Of course, unpaid dues will also be reflected on your credit report, causing it real harm as it can make your scores plummet to negative digits. This, in return, may cost you denied loans and not getting hired.
Apart from damaging your credit history, identity theft can also get hold of your insurance benefits. Using your information, identity thieves can make use of your hard earned medical benefits and health coverage; they can use up your insurance to pay for their medical expenses and leave you paying for their injuries. What's worse is that their hospitalization can also end up in your file, which may confuse your future diagnosis and treatments when you're already the one sick.
A criminal record may also be added on your rap sheet when you've been victimized by identity theft. As a criminal already has your personal information, once they get busted from another crime, they can easily give your name up to the police, listing you as the one who committed the deed. This, again, is a really serious matter, as you can be put in jail for a crime that you don't even have any relation to.
This is why you should do everything in your power to protect your privacy and prevent identity theft from causing you real damages. By doing regular identity theft check on yourself and finances, you may be able to easily detect any signs of the crime.
