3 Popular Varieties Of Freshwater Trout

People began fishing for fun some fifty generations ago. Once upon a time, fishing was a major means of livelihood. Later, it developed into an exciting sport in the northern parts of America and in places beyond it. All of a sudden, amateur anglers began demanding a lot of information with regard to fishing. Learning about varieties of game fish and fishing techniques became an extremely interesting and exhilarating experience.

Several years ago, your success as an angler could be measured by the number of trout you caught. Now, due to acute shortage of fish, you are wise if you practise "catch and release" technique to ensure a plentiful supply of trout in your local streams and rivers. The success of modern anglers is measured in terms of the care they take to preserve the sport of fishing for the benefit of many generations in the future by protecting the population of fish in the water bodies.

1. Brown Trout

Trout is the most commonly available freshwater game fish. They stand on an equal rank with any other game fish and form the head of food chains in most of the streams and rivers in which they are found.

Anglers enjoy luring and trapping a variety of trout that is popularly known as "brown trout." Brown trouts thrive in cold water and live in streams and lakes. They are quite lively when the temperature of the water is just right for them.

This variety of trout never fails to excite anglers and provides fresh challenge to their angling skills. Brown trout is believed to be specially created for anglers because it seeks food near the surface of water. It gained its reputation as a game fish because the English nobility used to enjoy the fight it put up when caught. In 1992, the largest trout fish, weighing forty pounds, was trapped in Arkansas.

2. Rainbow Trout

Among the loveliest fish in the family of trouts is, surprisingly, not at all a trout. Recently, scientists have discovered that the "rainbow trout" is a small-sized cousin of the Pacific Salmon.

In spite of their family characteristics, rainbow trouts are known for their peaceful nature. They live in peace with each and every variety of fish swimming in the streams. Unlike the brown trout that enjoys slow water and calm ponds, the rainbow trout loves swift-moving water, rich in oxygen. The rainbow trout's zest for life has made it a favorite of all anglers.

3. Brookie

Another trout that has turned out to be not a trout at all is the "Brookie" or the "Brooke trout," which lives in the cool streams of north-east America and is related to the Char. One can safely say that brookies are only related to the lake trouts and don't form part of their family because they hardly look like members of the trout family. Brookies can be found only in pure water in unpolluted surroundings.

Since the brookies are found only in wild areas, anglers are exceptionally fond of it. Some people criticize the "brookie" as being very beautiful but dumb. Although they are greatly admired for their beauty, they are not that difficult to catch. The largest brookie was caught in the Nipigon river in Ontario, Canada.

The red trout is yet another species of trout that is usually found hidden in branches and bracken. The deep-water lake trout is yet another variety of trout.

The trout is now under the protection of fish population control laws. Anglers are, therefore, required to release trout that are of a certain size. This is because bigger trout are more capable of spawning and releasing fertilized eggs. It is hoped that the trout will survive for many more generations thanks to the number of programs based on the protection of the trout population and responsible fishing.
