Catfishing is a brilliant sport and when you are battling with the mighty wells catfish on the beautiful river Ebro you will be thinking how incredible it is. Since catfish were introduced to the river 30 years ago their population has increased amazingly, this is probably the main reason why so many people travel to the Ebro in Spain.
Catfishing is a very challenging sport especially when you are doing it against fish that can weigh over 200lbs, the Wels catfish is Europe's largest fish that lives in freshwater. These catfish get at least 9 months of growing season which is a reason why they are so big, another reason is that there are so many smaller fishes in the Ebro that they can practically eat whenever they like.
Catfishing is not an easy sport either, you can snag one and not have it back to you for an hour maybe even more, this is not always the case but there are some very, very big catfish out there. This is why catfishing is so popular, people just love to battle with a monster fish and the satisfaction after catching one of these monsters is unbeatable especially after you have chased the catfish for a 100 or so yards befoe getting anywhere near reeling it in.
If you are going to be catfishing on the river Ebro then there are so many different spots you can go to, to get different results, a lot of the catfishing going on upstream of the river is good but this is where a lot of anglers are. If you decide that you want to go a bit lower down the river where there is practically nobody you can find some of the best catfishing you will ever participate in. The lower part of the river is unspoilt and contains a lot of huge catfish. Plenty of fish weighing in at over 100lbs are caught in this area regulary.
The lower part of the Ebro can see some massive catches and regularly catfish weighing in the 100lbs are caught every day. The reason this place is so good for catfishing is because all the mullet travelling from the Mediterranean are round here and the catfish are ready to eat as much as they can.
The catfish usually are lurking around the weeds and reed beds looking for the mullet or other kind of food for them. The best time of year to go catfishing is usually based around the May and June months which provide some brilliant sport as the fish are just finishing their spawning in mid-may. At these times of year you can expect to see roughly 5 or more catfish catches per day. This just means that the sport is more and more electrifying when you catch something. While you aren’t catching any catfish you can just chill out, have a few drinks or go check out the sites in your boat or go to the local towns. There is always something to do which is why catfishing holidays are so great.
