Fish flying when considered as a sport, consists of several specialized expertise coming in delicate balance of precision and rhythm. One of the specialized skills is setting up the hook. Most often this technique is neglected by most fly fishermen when they spend lots of hours reading and practicing about fly tying and casting skills. It is nearly impossible to practice to set up the hook when there is no live fish at the other end of the waters. This is unlike most other skills.
At the outset, a successful hook essentially starts when the fly is tied either on the river bank or at home. Ensure that the hooks are as sharp as the razor. When the hook is dull, there are fewer chances of finding the mark in the trout's mouth.
In most techniques of fly fishing, it is important that you set the hook very soon as possible. When the water is fast, the trout strikes the fly sooner and with good force. The trout would soon realize that there is an artificial fly in its mouth and it could and would spit it out in less than a splitting second.
When Fly fishing is tried in slow moving water, it would act as an exception to set the hook sooner. If the water gets slow the trout would act more leisurely. They might take a second or two to have the fly. If the hook is set too soon, you would be likely to pull the fly away very soon. However, if the hook is set late, then the trout might spit it outside. Such is a delicate balance which often gets into fly fishing.
At times, when fishermen try fly fishing, they become so excited that when they hook a trout, it is done with a huge force. Such attempts usually result in broken tippits. Quick setting the hook doesn't mean applying force. A way to avoid breaking the tippits would be using a slip for striking which would cushion the tippit.
When fly fishing in an upstream presentation, you could strip in between the line with the hand as the hook is set. This would take off major slack in the line improving chances for better hook set.
As you set the hook with the help of surface techniques in fly fishing, it is important to be able to view the fly so that you get a good hook set. When fly fishing is done with the help of underwater technique, it is significant to see the indicator as the hook is set. Right timing is relevant every instance.
A lot of experienced fly fishermen keep spending a lot of time wondering about the strike and how they would move as the hook is set. When imaginary trout's are hooked to land in your hands, you would have higher chances of getting the actual fishes when fly fishing techniques are attempted.
