Noisy stiations like busy restaurants can create some very difficult listening situations for hearing aid users. While some hearing aids will perform better in noise than others, there are some things that you can do yourself to help your hearing in those noisy situations.
The most important feature for hearing in noise is directional microphones. Some aids have two microphones built into them that work together to reduce noise. One of the microphones focuses to front where you are generally trying to hear, while the other focuses behind you. The microphone focusing behind you actually reduces the amplification for those sounds. This way the sounds behind you arent as strong or clear as the sounds that are in front of you. This makes it easier to hear. Almost all BTE and Open Ear hearing aids have these now, as do many custom in the ear hearing aids. CIC hearing aids are too small.
Noise reduction is also helpful in making it more comfortable t listen in noise. This technology really only helps with steady state sounds like fans and motors, but it does help. Most of the newer hearing aids have some kind of noise reduction. The more expensive the hearing aid the more advanced the noise reduction.
There are things that you can do to help you hear better in noisy situations. If you don't have directional microphones, position yourself with your back to a wall. That will automatically reduce the noise with which you have to contend. If you have directional microphones on your hearing aids, sit with your back to the noise and let them do their job. Try to sit at tables more to the side of the room instead of the middle. Whenever possible choose restaurants and places that have carpet and wall hangings that absorb sound. Keep in mind that many restaurants create an uncomfortable environment in order to get people to come in and leave quickly. This can be really bad for hearing aids. Read lips and watch facial expressions and body language for information. Don't try to understand every little word. When we know and understand the context of the converstaion, we can figure out what people are saying.
There will always be places where no one can hear well, even those with normal hearing, so don't expect to do better than them. Even with hearing aids you still have damaged ears and hearing aids cannot change that. Make sure when you get hearing aids you are purchasing the right technology for your needs. Often for just a little more money patients could have had hearing aids that would do a far better job. Speak with your hearing professional about your needs and concerns and they will help guide you to the right hearing aid for you.
