Let's start our discussion on heart rate monitors by explaining what they are and what they do for you.
Fundamentally, heart rate monitors (HRM) monitor your heart beat. That much can be ascertained from the name alone. But modern science has made them a lot smarter then that. The modern versions were designed primarily for the athlete. Those wishing to exercise, wanting to keep on eye on their vital signs as they worked out.
Traditionally, an HRM was designed to strap onto your chest to carry out its checks. It makes sense of course, because the closer the monitor is to your heart the more accurate the readings. Unfortunately, as athletes became more mobile, and the demand for HRM increased, the need for more portability increased. As a result, and with the advances in technology wrist monitors were born.
Initially, the wrist monitor still required a chest piece to communicate with, but over time, strapless one piece heart rate monitors were born the dispenses with the chest piece element altogether. All you need to do with these types of HRM is to place your fingers over the measuring area and within a few seconds you will receive your heart rate reading.
There are of course a wide range of HRM's to choose from, notwithstanding those mentioned above. You can get basic models which will deliver the core information regarding your heart rate, and for many that is all that they will ever need. At the other end of the spectrum are more complex scientific monitors, which will deliver a n awful lot more information, and are aimed at the very serious to professional type of athlete.
There are uses for heart rate monitors beyond simple checking that your heart rate is ok. If you train seriously, you will know that to maximise your training time, you will need to push yourself hard. With a coach shouting in your ear, you probably do not need a HRM for this, but if you are on your own, the HRM can act as a coach by telling you when your effort falls below a required level.
