As I am writing this article, New Year Eve is fast approaching. Many of us make a pledge that this is the year that we will finally get in shape. We join a gym and buy exercise equipment for our homes. By March we won’t know where the gym is and our laundry will be drying on the treadmill we bought at the bargain basement. Here are some tips to help you succeed with your home equipment purchases.

Most home gym equipment gets setup in a corner of the basement. Often this is a dark and dingy place that only a vampire would feel comfortable in. Invest some time and money in making your workout area comfortable. At the very least a few posters and some decent lighting will go a long way to sprucing up your basement workout corner. $20 for a gallon of paint will brighten up a bare concrete floor.

If you don't have space for a dedicated workout area make sure that the equipment you purchase will fit into a shared room without too much hassle. If you need 2 people to pull your fold up treadmill from behind the couch then you are very unlikely to keep up with a workout routine. Magnetic resistance upright exercise bikes will fit into a corner of most living spaces and can be used while you watch your favorite prime time shows.

Another factor that is surprisingly overlooked is the enjoyment factor. It may seem obvious, but if you have hated riding a bike since you were a child then don't force yourself to ride an exercise bike because you read in some article that it would fit into most living spaces! Consider an elliptical trainer or a treadmill instead.

Finally is the entertainment factor. Personally I do not like to watch TV while I work out, but I know many people that keep up with the news while sitting on an exercise bike. I like to have some upbeat music playing really loud while I run on my treadmill.

The less work it takes to work out and the more fun it is the more likely you are to stick with your new year's resolution. Make sure that you do everything that you can to ensure that you will succeed this year.
