Walking 10,000 Steps a Day -- A "When" Checklist

Here is a checklist to help you to identify when you might walk toward a very beneficial goal of 10,000 steps a day:

[_] Can you wake thirty minutes -- or even an hour -- earlier than normal and use that time to walk?

[_] Depending on where you live, a prime-time TV show can have up to fifteen or more minutes of commercials every hour. If you were to walk in front of your TV set throughout all commercials, how many minutes per day would that be?

[_] When you must go to the grocery store, drug store, or other near-to-home shop, how much time could you spend walking each way?

[_] When you arrive at and depart from your office building where you usually take an elevator to and from your floor, respectively, how much time could you spend ascending and descending stairs?

[_] When you are on a conference call, how much of the meeting duration can you use for walking?

[_] When you are meeting in person with others, how much of the meeting can you convert into a walking meeting?

[_] Whenever you go to the restroom during a workday, how long does it take to walk each way? (Multiply that answer times the number of restroom trips/workday.)

[_] When you go to lunch during a workday, how long does it take to walk to and from your dining area (or the local cafe or restaurant)?

[_] When you take a break in the afternoon, how far can you walk in your available time?

[_] If you can walk to and from your house of worship, how long does it take to walk each way?

[_] If you are a college student living in a dormitory, how long does it take you to walk from your dorm to your first class? Between classes?

[_] At the end of a day, how much time can you set aside for a nice walk?

[_] When you take your children or grandchildren to their sports practice sessions or games, how often can you walk around during those sessions or games?

[_] When you park at a large shopping mall, how far away from your destination store can you park so as to maximize your walking during your shopping?

[_] When you are waiting for someone to meet you (for example, at a restaurant), how far from your specific meeting point can you walk and still be only a few minutes away once that person arrives there?

[_] When you are early for an appointment (such as at the dentist), how many steps can you walk before your actual appointment time?

[_] When you mow your lawn or perform other gardening activities such as raking leaves, how many times can you walk back and forth?

A typical adult must walk for an hour and fifteen minutes to complete 10K steps. If the answers to at least some of these questions can be accumulated into at least that much time, then you have found when you can walk throughout your day to reach your 10K-steps/day goal!
