Kirk Mahoney, Ph.D., loves to walk and run, and his SpryFeet.com website provides practical research for runners and walkers. What if you could walk 10K steps/day? What would this mean to you personally? What would this mean to your loved ones? What would this mean to your friends? What would this mean to your neighbors? What would this mean to your business associates?
How would you feel? What would you attempt? Whom would you meet? How would your relationship with your partner change? Where would you be able to travel with your loved ones? What impact would you make on those close to you? How would it change your interactions with friends? What would you do differently in situations that today are very stressful at work? With whom would you choose to do business?
Taking 10K steps/day can change your life in many ways. What would it mean to you personally? For example, are you prepared to feel more calmed and energized simultaneously? Are you ready to attempt a physical activity such as hiking a portion of the Grand Canyon or even something as mundane as walking to the grocery store from the far end of the parking lot? And can you imagine what it would mean to meet others who are just as interested in better health as you are?
Turning to those closest to you, can you see how your partner might join you on your journey toward a 10K-steps/day goal, with the two of you sometimes or often walking together and becoming closer in the process? Have there been places that you have deferred visiting with your loved ones because you did not have the stamina for a walking tour or to climb a set of stairs? And can you imagine how your taking 10K steps/day could have positive long-term effects on your loved ones, such as your parents, your children, or your grandchildren?
Beyond your circle of loved ones, what would it mean to your friends for you to be taking 10K steps/day? Would they notice how you have "released" a few pounds and be inspired by it? Would they be more willing to make a date with you for something that requires some physical endurance, such as a tour of homes or a bike ride?
What about your neighbors? Would you get to know them better, simply because you would be more likely to walk by their homes on your daily pursuit to walk 10K steps/day? Perhaps you would start going for walks with some of your neighbors. Can you imagine the positive effect on your neighbors and your relationships with them?
What about your work situation? Do you find certain work situations very stressful? What if you had the extra physical stamina to handle tougher assignments? Could that make a difference in your career? How is your mental toughness? Can you feel how taking 10K steps/day could improve that? And can you foresee increased mental clarity and how this could let you make better business choices for everything from purchases to the people with whom you do business?
If you could walk 10K steps/day, how WOULD your world change for the better? Can you see those changes? Can you feel those changes? Might you hear those changes? Embrace the changes, and go for it!

The lessons I learned from this is that you should begin a running program gradually. Ideally a walk/jog program is the way to go.
